It sounds like magic. Lose your dog. Yet still be able to immediately pin-point his or her exact location!
Anyone who has been through the pain of losing their dog – even for a short time – knows that it can be an extremely stressful experience. But what many dog owners do not know is that there is actually technology available to easily retrieve your missing dog and bring them home to safety. Known as GPS Dog Tracking Collars, we take a quick look at how one such collar operates in today’s blog. For the purposes of full disclosure, we have featured our own tracking collar, known as RF-V30 pet GPS tracker.
Combining technology to find your dog
A modern dog collar tracking device combines various different technologies to help find your missing dog. At the minimum, the device itself will need to know where it is and it will typically use Global Satellite Positioning (GPS) to identify its position on the globe.
Being able to locate itself – and therefore the dog that it’s attached to – is a good start, but that’s not the end of the story. After all, a tracking device is useless if it doesn’t also transmit that information back to you. So, it must also contain a mini mobile phone (or SIM card), in order to beam its location back to you; the dog’s owner.
But the technology required doesn’t stop there.
Using technology to prevent your dog going missing
Since you’ve already invested in a device to help retrieve your lost dog, it makes sense to use the same piece of equipment to ensure that your pet doesn’t go missing in the first place. Again, thanks to a bit of additional technology stuffed into your GPS Pet Tracking Collar, you can actually receive an alert, even before your dog is officially ‘missing’.
The best pet tracking collars do this by incorporating a WiFi receiver in the device. As a dog owner, you simply let the device know your home WiFi name. Then, as soon as your dog breaches a certain boundary, you can receive an alert on your phone which essentially says, “Hey, did you know your dog’s just left the vicinity?”
AN IDEAL DOG TRACKING COLLAR COMBINES TECHNOLOGY
So far we’ve discussed three technologies that should be combined to produce the best dog tracking collar. We can sum them up as follows:
1. Global Satellite Positioning (GPS) built-in to identify your dog’s location.
2. Phone (or SIM card) built-in to transmit the dog’s location to your phone.
3. WiFi built-in to track the moment your dog leaves the vicinity of your home.
Locating your dog on your phone
Ultimately you’ll want to be able to quickly and easily check on your dog’s location and nowadays it’s hard to imagine a more straightforward approach than checking your phone.
We use our phones for so many reasons these days – occasionally even for making phone calls – so why not also check the location of your dog on your phone. This is the final piece of the GPS Pet Tracking Collar puzzle. By using either an iPhone or Android device (or if nothing else is available a special tracking website on any internet connected computer or device), the dog owner may instantly identify the location of their pet.
This is typically displayed on a Google Map screen, which pinpoints not only your current position but that of your missing pet as well.
Many such dog tracking apps will also provide you with turn-by-turn directions in order that you may locate your missing pooch.
