The Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival (it’s also called Double Fifth Festival), which is celebrated on the fifth day of May on the lunar calendar. It is one of the most important Chinese festivals. Besides, the other important Chinese festivals are Mid-Autumn Festival, Chinese New Year and Tomb-sweeping Day.
1. History of Dragon Boat Festival
The origin of this summer festival centers around a scholarly government official named Qu Yuan. He was a good and respected man, but he eventually fell into disfavor in the emperor's court as the misdeeds of jealous rivals.
Being unable to regain the respect of the emperor, Qu Yuan jumped himself into the Mi Low River, it is said that the local people, who admired him, raced out in their boats to save him, meanwhile, they threw rice into the river to appease the river dragons. Although they have been unable to find out Qu Yuan, but their efforts are still commemorated during the Dragon Boat Festival.
2. Activities during Dragon Boat Festival
1)Eating Zongzi(粽子)
We usually eat zongzi during the dragon boat festival, in the south of China, the local people like the Zongzi with meat, peanut, egg yolk, or other fillings inside, in the north of China, the local people like the zongzi with sugar, beans, peanut and honey jujubes inside. The tradition of zongzi is to remind us of the village fishermen scattering rice across the water of the Mi Low river in order to appease the river dragons so that they would not devour Qu Yuan.
2)Dragon boat racing
Dragon boat racing is one of the important activities of the Dragon Boat Festival. Dragon-boat, as the term suggests, is a boat carved like a dragon, normally more than ten boats would participate in this activity, and then hundreds and thousands of audiences would come and cheer. Dragon boat racing is not only a kind of sports and recreation activity, but also reflects the people's minds and inherits the spirit of patriotism and collectivism.

4)Spice bag
